A Museum of Beach Ephemera : A Proposal of the Intuitive Research Society
participating artists: Wes Johansen, Vanessa LaValle & Liza Rifkin

By showcasing the wear of time and natural patterns created by decay and emphasizing the process of rust, discoloration, and nature reclaiming the metal we explore the passing of time and the culture of Euclid Beach Park. Our work explores the themes of Diorama with our own perspective.

The beach is a place of relaxation and amusement; the detritus of the beach is a memento to ephemeral days spent lounging in the hot sun. We will set up white pedestals on the sand that exhibit handmade beach jewelry and artifacts we create for this event through found objects for this gallery on the shore.

Cleveland has boasted many neighborhood amusement parks, dance halls and thousands of soda fountains during the Golden years. Everyone who lived it loved it, and everyone who didn’t is nostalgic for those good old days. In another 500 years this will be an archaeological site where the future looks to answers on our culture.

capturing the physical monument and the fleeting moment
Mixed-media artist Vanessa LaValle has created a coloring book celebrating Ingenuity at the Detroit-Superior Bridge and is positioned near the East side of the Bridge with free coloring books and a Photo + Costume Booth for participants to dress in 1920's style clothing for a photo shoot. The best photographs will make it into the final coloring book that will be available after the event via email. In capturing the strength and graphic imagery of the bridge and combining it with the energy of the festival, this mixed-media coloring book will serve as a way for visitors to engage with Ingenuity on another level.

Ingenuity unveiled the schedule of events for this year’s festival
held September 24 - 26 on the subway level of the Veterans Memorial (Detroit Superior) Bridge. The festival runs Friday from 4:30 until 1 AM, Saturday from Noon until 1 AM, and Sunday from Noon until 5 PM. The 2010 festival is completely free and open to the public.
This year’s festival will open on Friday, September 24 with the Wild Music Marching Band starting at Star
Plaza and winding through the streets of downtown, ending at the bridge with a bombastic Asian
percussion performance by Icho Daiko at approximately 4:30 PM.

Ingenuity 2010 shows a diverse range of music, dance, theater, and other performances as well as a number of ongoing art and technology installations. Ingenuity continues its exploration of the nexus between art and technology including a Digital Grafﬁti Wall, a ten foot wall of water that produces images provided by visitors and can be travelled through by swing, and a concert/lecture from Dr. Kamal Chemali of the Cleveland Clinic and pianist Benoit which explores music’s affect on the brain. The bridge will also be transformed by artists like Kasumi who will be creating a video archway inside the bridge,and The Amazing Solar Fire Lightshow which transformed the space during Ingenuity’s Speakeasy 2.0 earlier this year.

The festival will also include musical performances by Angelin Chang, electric violinist Dixon, and Opera Circle. Theatrical premieres from include TS 213’s Sisyphus, Theater Ninja’s Absence and performances by The Dramatic Arts Movement Ensemble (DAME).
Dance artists such as Lisa Locke, MorrisonDance,Verb Ballets, and Dancing Wheels will also explore the bridge space through movement and technology throughout the bridge span.

A eclectic mix of other artists, installations, and exhibitions will also be featured on both sides of the bridge and over the river. The festival will also bring back its Family Village featuring interactive art,technology, and music for children from toddlers to teens. A wide range of food and art vendors will also be present on the bridge for the festival.

This year’s festival will also feature Ingenuity Nights with performances from world-class bands, DJs and other musicians that will ﬁll both the East and West sides of the bridges with music and dancing.
Performances by Turntables on the Hudson (Live), Wonder Mike and Master Gee formerly of the Sugarhill Gang with HenDogg & DJ Robb the Noize, Cubic Zirconia, and Boatzz. Bringing nighttime crowds artists installations, the interior caverns of the bridge, special lighting, plus fantastic views of Downtown Ingenuity Nights is slated to be the talked about weekend event this Fall.

This year’s festival is free and open to the public. All events will take place on the subway level of the Detroit Superior Bridge and in the unused subway stations on the East and West Side. This is a completely indoor space protected from the weather.

Parking for the festival is available on both the East and West side of the Bridge. Street and lot parking in the Warehouse District, particularly on West 9th is easily walkable to the East Side Festival Entrance. On the West Side of the Bridge, lot and street parking near the intersection of West 25 and Detroit will also
be available.

Ingenuity Fest : Speakeasy

As some of you may or may not know, Ingenuity is coming, and as a local blogger I attended a tour of the Detroit-Superior Bridge Pedestrian Level. Photos will be posted eventually (see earlier blog post), but for now - content yourself with this press release about their fundraising Speakeasy:

INGENUITY ANNOUNCES JULY 23rd SPEAKEASY 2.0 EVENT
Fundraiser Invites Cleveland to Party Like It's 1929

CLEVELAND (May 14, 2010) -- Ingenuity will be hosting the one-night only Speakeasy 2.0 event on Friday, July 23rd in the West Side subway tunnels of the Detroit-Superior Bridge. This event offers guests a unique opportunity to experience music, dancing, drinks, and food in the rarely seen catacomb spaces of the bridge that open out to spectacular views of downtown.

This fundraiser begins at 6 PM with cabaret performances, classic cocktail classes, food, drinks, fun, and more. Tickets for this portion of the evening will be $100 with hors d'oeuvres and drinks included. At 9 PM the doors open for a more casual Party on the Bridge with DJs, drinks and dancing. Guests can enter for this part of the evening for only $20 which includes two drink tickets. Speakeasy Under the Bridge benefits IngenuityFest, Cleveland's cutting edge festival of arts, music, and technology. The festival will be held in 2010 from September 24th to 26th also on the lower level of the Detroit Superior Bridge, but in an expanded space that will cross the river into the East Side. Admission to the festival is free for the first time this year.
